Did someone say Dutch?

Tue 1st November 2011

Most of the buildings in Melacca have a Dutch influence, with their red brick colour and criss-cross detailing. This church illustrates this archeitectural style perfectly.

The laid back Chinese feel really reminds me of Hoi An in Vietnam. There are lots of antique shops which I could spend hours walking around!

I like Melacca, it has a very relaxed atmosphere and the people are so friendly. It’s strong Chinese community means the streets are decorated with pretty lanterns and lights.

War memorial

Fri 28th October 2011

Next to City Hall lies an old WW1 memorial. The Town Hall and City Hall, cricket ground and memorial, you can definitely tell the British have been here!

The war memorial was originally erected to honour the fallen soldiers of the Great War – 1914 to 1918. The plaque to the left of  the monument also lists other conflicts the memorial now honours, covering the last 100 years of conflicts in which Malaysia was involved.

Penang City Hall

Fri 28th October 2011

This afternoon we took a walk to see the old Colonial building of Penang City Hall. A very impressive sight, standing grandly next to what used to be a cricket ground.

You can definitely tell the British have been here. We were standing on a cricket ground, next to a war memorial and the stunning Penang City Hall. It has that feel of England about it; you could easily be in one of hundreds of little villages across England with similar features (apart from the high humidity and temperatures).

The City Hall was built by the British in 1903.

A menacing storm

Fri 28th October 2011

Every day around 4 or 5 o clock you can see the sky darkening and the storm clouds getting closer and closer. It’s very impressive, even if it does mean we get a bit wet in the evening!

We’ve learnt over the past few months to always take your poncho out when you go for dinner in the evening. Those clouds in the distance love to drop a tonne of rain!

A mighty fine view

Thu 27th October 2011

Here we are enjoying the beautiful view from the top of the hill. You could see from Georgetown to Penang Bridge and beyond.

I am so glad we didn’t need to climb up this hill today. I don’t think either of us would’ve survived it!
