Is this how you do it?

Tue 9th August 2011

Matt doesn’t look too happy here, he is, it’s just surprisingly tricky lighting these little sticks! I think I left mine in the flame for too long, maybe there’s a certain knack which comes with daily practice.

I don’t know what type of oil they were pouring on the dish to make these candles burn; it was available to buy at one side. There was no smell and very little smoke. Dragon juice maybe?

Placing the candles

Tue 9th August 2011

I’d love to know what most of this festival meant, unfortunately we couldn’t find anyone who really spoke English, so we joined in anyway. Claire’s majestic hand is placing this candle.

Lighting the candles

Tue 9th August 2011

We were given some sticks to light by a very friendly Chinese man. There was a lady lighting her’s beside me and as she turned, she nearly walked into me. So that is why I am laughing in this picture!

Enter the dragon

Tue 9th August 2011

These two dragons stand opposite each other with burning incense sticks between them. If the dragon is a symbol of power, strength and good luck, I can see why they are thought to be legendary creatures in China.

Say a prayer for the Buddha

Tue 9th August 2011

This gentleman has lit has sticks and candles and is praying in front of the Buddha. No one seemed to mind that we wanted to capture the moment on camera, in fact, they welcomed it.

There seemed to be 3 or 4 stages to this religious festival. I believe this is where the food was placed on the table to be blessed before being offered to the Buddha.
